Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs) have been on the radar as a contributing factor to rising hospital costs, medication shortages, stifling introduction of innovative products from smaller companies, and hurting patients. Before the 1970s, GPOs’ main source of revenue was through membership dues. Today, GPOs collect “contract administrative fees” (rebates, kickbacks) from vendors typically based on a percentage of the costs of the products that the GPO negotiates with hospitals.
