In most cases, customer service at a majority of hospitals consists of the same cookbook message beginning with “we are sorry to hear” and ending with “you can email” or “you can call”. When the patient reaches out, 9 out of 10 times the hospital response does little to resolve the complaint and improve patient satisfaction.
A major source for dissatisfaction is the long emergency department waiting times with patients having to queue up to receive treatment. It is not uncommon to see wait times of 12 to 16 hours, and some patients have reported wait times of loner than 24 hours.
Long waits lead to worsening medical conditions, more pain, and progressive patient anxiety. When combined with depersonalized interactions from overworked nurses, there are unpleasant consequences. What follows are various manifestations of lack of compassion and missing empathy, ranging from ignoring patient needs to outright patient abuse.
